On a night in June 1886, the small village of Te Wairoa was devastated by the violent eruption of Mt Tarawera.
Now, 129 years later, the village has been uncovered for you to see. Learn how Maori and early settlers lived and worked together, guiding visitors to see the world famous Pink and White Terraces. Come and enjoy a leisurely walk and explore the sites that have been excavated from the now peaceful village. Hear the stories of Tarawera in our award winning museum. Visit the mesmerising natural Wairere waterfall, plunging to the valley below. All this with the added benefit of not having to wait in queues. We have guiding options available.
