Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is one of the jewels of the Hauraki Gulf. It’s just 14 kilometres by ferry from the hustle and bustle of New Zealand’s largest city but, in landscape, lifestyle and experience, it’s a whole world away.

Come over for a visit and you’ll find galleries, craft boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The island is also the home to more than a dozen high-quality vineyards which will more than appeal to the wine lover in you. There are white sandy beaches perfect for swimming, strolling along or having a picnic in the sun. Try sea kayaking or if you’re a walker explore the island’s trails which take you along the cliff tops, down to the beaches and into quiet and cool native forest enclaves. Wander along to the eastern end of the island and the Stony Batter walkway leads you to a system of World War II gun emplacements and underground tunnels.

There are many places to stay on Waiheke Island. Rent a beach house and wake up to the shoosh of the waves breaking on the beach or, if you’re on a bit of a budget, there are a number of friendly backpacker hostels.
