Big River Track Itinerary

Surrounding the historic west coast town of Reefton, the rugged and mountainous Victoria Conservation Park covers 209,000 hectares. 

DAY 1

Waiuta > Big River Hut

Travel through gold mining country as you follow an old pack track to the Big River South mine, the St George Mine and stamping battery. Spend the night at the Big River mining township, where you will discover a wealth of gold mining history.

DAY 2

Big River > Inangahua Swingbridge

Journey past the Golden Lead Battery site and numerous historic relics, including coalmine trams, sawmills and abandoned hut sites. Enjoy picturesque views and changing forest canopy before crossing the Inangahua River Swingbridge.

Getting there:

This track can be walked in either direction.

  • Waiuta: From Greymouth follow SH7, turn at Waiuta Road, then follow Blackwater Road to Waiuta.
  • Reefton: Follow SH7 South-east from Reefton to Soldier's Road.
