Christchurch’s cityscape and landscape has simultaneously changed of late and is now bolder and brasher with a raft of great activities to do. Start exploring!
Christchurch by Vintage Pedal Power
One of the best ways to explore the Christchurch central city is by pedal power. Vintage Peddler bikes offers vintage bikes for hire for those folks who enjoy the finer bikes in life. Choose from a fleet of vintage bikes and let your self-paced, self-guided adventure begin. Bikes available direct from Vintage Peddler or at YHA Christchurch Rolleston House.
Enjoy the leisurely side of Christchurch aboard a restored heritage Tram. Knowledgeable drivers will point out the landmarks and local sights including New Regent Street, Cathedral Junction and the Canterbury Museum. After your tram ride, glide along the Avon River aboard handcrafted flat-bottomed boat, poled along by the punter. Admire the trailing willows of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens or head to the hills and climb aboard the Gondola for panoramic views of Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains. Available from Welcome Aboard.
When you think, "Christchurch" you might not think 'Canyoning!" But you should!
Jump, slide, abseil, zip, flip and swim through a selection of canyons, narrow gorges with rock slides, waterfalls and deep pools surrounded by native forest. These canyons are a hop, skip and a one hour drive (at least) from Christchurch and a whole different world. There’s plenty of time for whoop whooping as well as floating with the currents as the small group makes its way downriver. Canyiong adventures are available for novices and intermediate. Available from Big Rock Canyons.
Akaroa dolphin swim
Some of the world’s smallest, friendliest and rarest dolphins frolic in Akaroa Harbour, a short 90 minute drive from Christchurch. Depart the charming historic French township of Akaroa aboard a jet boat and take a dip to get up close to the Hector’s Dolphins. Follow up your swim with some New Zealand’s fish ‘n chips. In addition to the dolphin swim, Black Cat Cruises also offers an Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise.
