Waiheke Island is often called the jewel in Auckland's crown and it is just a 35-minute ferry ride across the sparkling waters of the Hauraki Gulf. On the way you'll see the sprawling harbourside suburbs as well as some of the gulf's most beautiful islands including Brown's Island, Rangitoto, Motutapu and Rakino.
For many people the ferry ride is a novelty, particularly on a bright sunshiny day!
The island is perfect for a short visit – even if you only have a couple of hours it is well worth the trip. It’s a 15 minute walk up the hill or a short bus ride to the main village of Oneroa where you will find art galleries, an eclectic mix of shops and some great cafes and restaurants. Just five minutes from the village is pristine Oneroa beach so if you’re visiting on a sunny summer’s day, don’t forget your swimsuit!
If you’ve got a few more hours, a great way to experience the island is to come out with us on a Waiheke Island Wine Tour. We have lived on the island for ten years and since we set up our business we have shown hundreds of people our beautiful island. We love sharing the stories of the Maori history, life on the island today and also introducing our guests to some of the best wine makers on the island. A typical day out with us includes visits to three of the island’s top vineyards, at least 12 wine tastings, chilled bottled water, postcards and a wine map.
So if you’d like a great day trip visiting a stunningly beautiful place, put Waiheke Island on your list – it’s just a 35 minute ferry ride to paradise!
