A food-lover’s guide to the best flavours of Dunedin in just 7 days

It’s hard to sum up a city like Dunedin – there is so much to see and do – but even more to eat!

Pick up your motorhome from Christchurch and head to Dunedin, an easy 4.5 hour drive (you can also overnight on the way at beautiful Lake Tekapo where Alpine Springs offer a great way to warm up).

If you’re travelling this July, you might be lucky enough to arrive in Dunedin during the Cadbury Chocolate Carnival, which offers plenty of fun, games and of course, chocolate. The Cadbury Chocolate Factory is open year round for factory tours and tastings – guaranteed to make you want to stock up on treats to take home to friends and relatives.

Day 1. Saturday
Start your Flavours of Dunedin tour off with a bang. It’s time to join the crowds at the Saturday Otago Farmers Market where vendors offer fresh local fish, vegetables, baked goods, cheese, eggs, wine and many other local delicacies. Stock up for your motorhome kitchen, to enjoy fresh local food during the rest of your stay.

Day 2. Sunday
A late breakfast – or ‘Brunch’ as the New Zealander’s like to call it – is all about relaxing over good food as you get to know your temporary home. There’s no better place to chat to locals and get the feel of Dunedin than at one of its many popular cafes. Try Capers Cafe which boasts one of the country’s biggest (and best?) coffees.

Day 3. Monday
The weekend is over; it’s back to work for the producers of Dunedin’s best flavours. Start the motorhome and head to Evansdale Cheese Factory (about a 30 minute drive) for a creamy, tangy, sharp, milky, and thoroughly delicious tasting session.

Day 4. Tuesday
Stay in town today and enjoy a familiar face – the head of a pint of Speight’s, at the ale house the brewery sent to New Zealand back in 1995, to keep ex-pats topped up on their favourite brew.

Day 5. Wednesday
Give meat a break and do lunch today at Potpourri Cafe where vegetarian and vegan food is celebrated – and tasty!

Day 6. Thursday
Drink up! If you’re travelling with kids, the brightly coloured bottles at New Zealand’s oldest cordial maker, West’s, is sure to enchant. For those with grownup tastes, take a winery tour into the Waitaki Valley, where the cellar doors at Kurow Winery, Ostler Vineyard many others await.

Day 7. Friday
If you haven’t already visited the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, today’s the day to do so. If you’ve already squeezed it in, chances are today is the day to work some of the week’s indulgences off! Get out and get active – on a walk, a mountain biking adventure or hit the waves at the beach along Dunedin’s beautiful coastline.
