There are plenty of reasons that support the theory of summer being just as good a time to visit the Southern Lakes as winter. Adding another reason to the endless list is the new Cardrona Bike Park at Cardrona Alpine Resort.
Changing the skis or snowboard for a mountain bike seems quite a seamless task for many in the Southern Lakes. Both Queenstown and Wanaka have their fair share of mountain bike trails although few have the luxury of lift accessibility and none are as high as the trails at Cardrona Bike Park. The bike park offers New Zealand's highest lift accessed mountain bike trails and these trails range from beginner to expert (green to black diamond, much like on a ski field!).
Just like skiing and snowboarding, mountain biking is an activity that is fuelled by fun with a sense of active adventure. To just see the mountain without it's usual snowy white cover is a novelty in itself and you'll find it to be a much different place to explore. The Cardrona Bike Park also offers the freedom, for those who are game enough, to go off-trail in the various freeride zones. Like in winter, riding off-trail is for advanced riders only however near the resort base there are beginner trails and even a kids 'fun zone', perfect to watch the kids enjoy themselves.
In 2015, the Cardrona Bike Park will be open over the Easter School Holidays from April 4 -19. Lifts run daily from 10am-4pm and there is on mountain accommodation available . Having the trails a stone's through away from your doorstep means more time on the trails and less time loading everything into the car! Not planning on taking the car? Shuttles leave from Queenstown daily which can carry everything you’ll need to have a memorable day of peddling.
If you've never thought about visiting the Southern Lakes outside of winter then think again! It is a mountain biking mecca with limitless photo opportunities and the new Cardrona Bike Park gives you a chance to experience what summer on the mountains is really like!
