The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From your carriage you’ll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech rain forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth – a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always popular glaciers.
The TranzAlpine journey is an ideal weekend getaway or honeymoon vacation highlight. All carriages include both one way seating and tabled group seating allowing you to experience the amazing views while enjoying the company of other passengers on-board. An open air viewing carriage allows you to get even closer to the stunning scenery and provides many opportunities to photograph your favourite spots. There’s a lot to look forward to!
Our train journey sets off from Christchurch - New Zealand's largest city on the South Island. The trip is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 19 tunnels, and 4 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres.

Coastal Pacific – Picton to Christchurch - A journey along the edge of the world
The Coastal Pacific train journey travels between the delightful port of Picton and Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city.

Take in spectacular coastal views as you wind your way up the coastline. See seals, rolling hills and mighty peaks. Fresh seafood, fresh air and a fresh look at one of New Zealand’s most spectacular views. A day trip in Kaikoura for the family might be just the thing. Or for the full experience take the line all the way to Picton, or even across to Wellington!
One of the world's most scenic train journeys, the Coastal Pacific travels through 22 tunnels and crosses 175 bridges. As on the TranzAlpine, the Coastal Pacific includes an open air viewing carriage where all your senses are awakened with the clean, fresh, sea air.
The Northern Explorer - Auckland to Wellington - journey through the heart of the North Island in one day
The Northern Explorer is a journey through the heart of the North Island, travelling between Auckland - New Zealand's largest city and home of the Sky Tower, to Wellington - New Zealand's arts and culture capital. Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, popular with young and old alike. You also see fantastic views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges - all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views.
New carriages have been introduced onto all KiwiRail Scenic services to make the most of the spectacular scenery. The new air-conditioned carriages feature oversized side windows combined with unique skylight roof windows for a truly panoramic view.
Passengers can relax in seating arranged in pairs around tables, or as recliners that can be rotated to face whichever direction the train is travelling. The carriage windows are non-tinted, non-reflective glass – ideal for taking photos and there is an outside viewing car where nothing gets between you and the great outdoors. And inside you keep can track of the journey with an automated commentary via headphones at your seat, plus information displayed on the overhead HD video screens.
There is also a licensed cafe carriage providing snacks and light meals. Cold, hot, sweet, savory, gluten–free, or vegetarian there’s something fresh and tasty for everyone. You’ll also find a top selection of New Zealand wine, beers and other beverages to enjoy with your meal.
