Here are some of our favourites, several of which are 'gardens of national significance'.
The Blair Garden - Queenstown
This carefully considered garden is set amongst stunning scenery with grand views of the surrounding mountains. Jane Blair's garden is a creation 34 years in the making and her passion is clearly visible in the beautiful and immaculately maintained grounds. The old character cottage and stone shed are original pioneer constructions and vibrant colours abound from mature roses, bulbs and a great selection of shrubs and trees - don't miss her topiary apple trees, trained into swirls! Situated close to the beautiful Lake Hayes and listed as a Garden of National Significance, this garden is not to be missed.
Chantecler Garden – Queenstown
This fabulous 8 acre garden is the magnificent work of Mike Henry and is an absolute Otago must-see. Themed plantings borrow inspiration from French, English and Asian styles, among others, and Mike's vision has come to fruition with spectacular effect. The fantastic gardens and woodlands are framed by views of the Remarkables mountain range and the landscape is punctuated by water features, bridges and sculptures. The garden is a riot of colour with snowdrops, bluebells, tulips and daffodils resplendent in mass plantings. Herbaceous peonies thrive here and delight the eye in vast drifts of colour. Gaze across a field of 2000 lavenders and admire majestic rhododendrons, hundreds of azaleas, camellias, magnolias and a myriad of ornamental and specimen trees. A real treat all year round.
Falconer Garden - Clachanburn Station, Patearoa
A superb country garden oozing character and charm, this large, rambling garden is a labour of love for Jane Falconer. The garden is ablaze with colour throughout the seasons - from the bright hues of autumn to the stunning roses and perennials of summer. Mature trees and schist garden walls add form and permanence to the garden and a natural stream flows into two tranquil duck ponds. This address is also listed as a Garden of National Significance.
