When you want to go to one of the best destinations in New Zealand and have a low key relaxed break from a busy schedule where do you go?? Well Lake Wanaka was the destination of choice for Prince Harry to have a "day off" on his recent royal visit.
It's no surprise for those in the "know" as Lake Wanaka prides itself on it's laid back, low key approach to life and invites everyone to come, meet the locals and appreciate the stunning back drop of Mt Aspiring National Park and the lakes of the region.
While his fishing trip with Adventure Wanaka had to be cancelled due to the weather this didn't stop the Prince making the most of his time in Wanaka. Davy from Adventure Wanaka will be ruing the "one that got away" for a long time to come!
Prince Harry chose to stay at Riverrun on the outskirts of Wanaka. Riverrun is a stunning lodge set high on a hill overlooking the Lake Wanaka basin and surrounding mountains. Hostess, Meg Taylor was thrilled to have such a charming guest stay the night.
Chef Karen Marinkovic served Cardrona merino lamb for lunch with roasted spiced vegetables and salads and a layered apple and walnut cake along with dark chocolate date and ginger slices. The group enjoyed Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg pinot noir as well as a Felton Road pinot noir in the evening.
If Prince Harry enjoyed some time in town afterwards then no-one is telling and that's the way we like it in Lake Wanaka.
After a hearty breakfast Prince Harry thanked all the staff before promising to bring better weather next time he came back...
Lake Wanaka lies at the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, a pristine environment of striking mountains and deep alpine lakesand an area of spectacular natural beauty.
