Traverse through two national parks rich in natural and cultural heritage. Begin on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu and descend to the Tasman Sea.

From the flanks of Mt Ruapehu to the coastal shores of Whanganui, the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail is a route encompassing the alpine majesty of Mt Ruapehu, historic coach road and bridle trails, tranquil indigenous forest via two National Parks, a jet boat transport option for the Whanganui River link to Pipiriki, and a country road trail alongside the Whanganui River.

Take 3 - 5 days to ride the 1600m vertical decent over 200 km of cycle trail linked by a 31 km river section by jet boat. Riders can begin the trail from Raetihi, Ohakune or National Park Village and follow trail markers and signs along the journey to meet at the Mangapurua Trig before descending the 26 km to the Bridge to Nowhere and Mangapurua landing on the Whanganui River. Take a jet boat to Pipiriki to begin your final ride to the Tasman Sea in Whanganui. Off road grade 2 - 3 trails are linked by quiet rural road sections passing through scenic river valleys.

Day ride options are supported from Raetihi, Ohakune or National Park Village returning each day to your preferred accommodation. The best direction to ride is from the mountains of Tongariro National Park to the Tasman Sea at Whanganui.

Along the trail there many access points according to your preferences and self supported itinerary options. Trail maps are available at all Ruapehu and Whanganui i-SITE's and accommodation providers.
