There are plenty of things to do at Pouto Peninsula in Northland, but make sure you check the tides first.
Whether by 4x4 or by foot, check out the Pouto Lighthouse (but do allow 3-4 hours walking for this). It stands tall on the dunes with great views up and down the coast, and lots of sand dunes to scale -- and run down! Loads of fun.
There are more than 600 hectares of sand dunes, and plenty of birdlife too.
If you plan to drive along the beach (which is possible from Pouto to Baylys Beach quite some distance up the coast), be sure to read up on where/when and how. This coastal zone can be hazardous for the ill-informed!
