Quartz Reef Tailings (Time: 45 minutes return)
If you’re interested in seeing an excellent example of tailings formed as a result of ground sluicing during gold mining days, then this short walk is for you.
The tailings in the reserve remain virtually unmodified since being abandoned many years ago, and are clearly seen from a large viewing platform.
The walk starts 8km from Cromwell on SH8 heading towards Tarras, park at the John Bull Creek car park. Follow the orange markers up the hill, onto the terrace and into the reserve. Interpretation panels explain the formation and processes of the workings. This is also a great spot to enjoy some stunning views back to Cromwell and over Lake Dunstan to the Pisa Range.
