Rent with Budget Rent A Car for a relaxing journey of the Alpine Pacific Triangle
Starting off from Christchurch - Internationally known as the Garden City, Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand. The city has a strong English heritage which is still reflected through the willow lined Avon River that meanders through the downtown, the city’s many parks and gardens and its English architecture. In recent times the city’s history has been dominated by the hundreds of earthquakes which have taken their toll on the once beautiful downtown core. However, the future is bright for Christchurch with the rebuild now in full swing and an impressive blueprint that will ensure Christchurch becomes a truly international city.
The first leg of the Alpine Pacific Triangle takes you from the South Island's largest city of Christchurch towards the thermal alpine resort of Hanmer Springs. You'll start with an easy drive over the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains before hitting the foothills of North Canterbury. Pass through small rural towns like Amberley and Culverden as well as the wine growing region of Waipara, the perfect place to pick up a bottle of local wine to enjoy a night or two in Hanmer.
Drive number two of the Alpine Pacific Triangle takes you from the thermal resort town of Hanmer Springs to the coastal paradise of Kaikoura. Another relatively short trip, this journey takes on the Inland Road, a windy and hilly section of road that's also very quiet, being away from any major travel routes. Take your time to enjoy the highland scenery, walk the bush tracks and view Mt Lyford and its ski area. Arrive to the dramatic coastal scenery that is Kaikoura.
Journey three on the Alpine Pacific Triangle today. Depart Kaikoura and head south for Christchurch. Get the camera ready for one of the best coastal drives in the country! The road clings precariously to a small trip of land between the cliffs and the coast. Climb over mountain ranges and through small farming towns before reaching Waipara, Canterbury's premier wine growing region and a great place to enjoy lunch. Continue south over the Canterbury Plains before arriving in Christchurch once again.
