Rotorua has a fantastic leisure playground in its Whakarewarewa Forest, better known as the Redwoods. Here you will find many different tree species, but most popular is the tall and beautiful Californian Coast Redwoods.

A variety of leisure activities take place here, and just 7km from Econo Lodge Cleveland Motel this makes a great outing. Below an overview of activities.

Walking Tracks
The Redwoods offer well signposted walking tracks for all abilities and fitness levels. We recommend you start at the Redwoods information center so you can have a good look at the different tracks available and choose a route. There are short walks (1km) to intermediate and advanced hiking tracks. At the information center you can also get travel information and lovely souvenirs.

Tree Walk
Just opened in 2016 this brand new Tree Walk is a unique experience. At 12m high you can see the beautiful Redwoods from a different perspective. It’s a short 0.5km walk and suitable for all ages.Tickets are available at the Redwoods information center.

Mountain Biking
One of the oldest mountain bike networks in New Zealand, with master crafted trails, unbeatable riding surfaces, well draining volcanic soils, varying topography and fantastic scenery. It is no wonder Rotorua is renowned among mountain bikers as a premier riding destination. With around 130km of continually evolving trails, there is something to cater for all levels of rider, from beginners and family groups through to experts looking for extreme action.

Fitness Trail
The Waipa outdoor fitness trail opened in 2015 and is located near the Rotorua Mountain Bike carpark and facilities on Waipa State Mill Road. Here you will find stations with basic exercise instructions for a basic resistance exercise with a space available to add alternate exercises. The programmes are developed by the local Waiariki students and made available for download on The Redwoods website so that users can choose programmes that suit their level of ability and challenge themselves as they get fitter and stronger.

Horse Riding
Exploring the forest by horse back is a popular activity, particularly in the summer months when the tracks are firmer underfoot. Horse riding can be undertaken on dedicated horse trails and forestry roads. You are able to park horse floats just down from The Redwoods Gift Shop & Visitor Centre on a grassed area under the shade of some roadside Redwoods.
