Stewart Island & Ulva Island Birds

There are around 130 species of birds in and around Stewart Island, including land, sea and shore birds. Some rare birds have been released Ulva Island.

As soon as you arrive in Stewart Island, you are likely to be serenaded by the sound of the bellbird, the melodious tui and the raucous kaka parrot.

Many birds are easily seen in and around the village of Oban.  They include: bellbird, kaka, tui, red-crowned parakeet, tomtit, fantail, grey warbler, wood pigeon, variable and pied oystercatchers, kingfisher, white-faced heron and more.
