The Square is also known as "Te Marae-o-Hine," a Maori name that means the "Courtyard of the Daughter of Peace" — a name that commemorates a past leader and gives an inspiring message of hope for the future. Standing tall in the centre is the historic clock tower, which comes alive at night lit by ever changing coloured lights. Surrounding this are beautifully landscaped grounds, a public car park, and the i-SITE Palmerston North Visitor Centre. The many pathways through The Square connect people with cafes, restaurants, shops, accommodation, museums, galleries—all the essentials of city life.
