Mt Ruapehu has a number of fabulous volcanic short walks that can be both an alternative or complement to the Tongariro Crossing:

This easy walk starts near the car park and includes some locations used in The Lord of the Rings.

  • Skyline Ridge (1.5 – 2 hours)
Ascending to 2300 meters, the Skyline Ridge walk offers spectacular views of Tongariro National Park, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mt Tongariro and Lake Taupo.

  • Amphitheatre (1.5 – 2 hours)
Beginning at Knoll Ridge Chalet, you ascend to a natural amphitheater before making your way back to the base area at Whakapapa.
