Lonely Planet considers Orakei Korako to be one of the best thermal areas left in New Zealand and one of the finest in the world. Also, known as the Hidden Valley, Orakei Korako offers a wonderland of geysers, hot springs, mud pools, and some of the largest and most incredible silica terraces in the world.

Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
This geothermal park is one of New Zealand’s most colourful and natural volcanic environments. Volcanic Activity Centre
Here you can learn about the wonders of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Experience a 6.3km earthquake in the earthquake simulator, solve Plate Tectonics puzzles, create a tornado, see how a geyser works, and a load more of fun activities. There is also a great shop on-site where you can purchase volcanic book, posters, gems, and rocks.

Wairakei Tourist Park
Another local geothermal wonderland that offers something for everyone, from the adrenalin junkie to those seeking a relaxing wander and everyone inbetween. Wairakei Tourist Park combines natural marvels such as Huka Falls and active geothermal areas, with adventure activities and dining options. Known as a mountain biking mecca, an adventure playground and a tranquil retreat all rolled into one.

Tokaanu Thermal Pools
You will find these thermal pools in the village of Tokaanu, situated on the southern shores of Lake Taupo. The Tokaanu natural thermal pools have been used by the local Ngati Tuwharetoa people for bathing, cooking and dyeing clothes for more than five centuries. The therapeutic mineral pools offer visitors the opportunity to relax, with private pools and an heated outdoor pool.

Riverboat Waireka
Cruise the Waikato River on the historical Riverboat Waireka. This unique experience includes a hot swim in the thermal waters of Lake Ohakuri, a stop off at the thermal wonderland of Orakei Korako, and then up river to Fletchers Reserve.
