I loved getting mail as a kid, the anticipation of ripping up that envelope or parcel to see what was held inside no matter how small. So combine this with another childhood love, that of boats and one of my most favourite places in the world, the Marlborough Sounds – the Magic Mail Run is a match made in heaven. Well that might be taking it a little too far as I wouldn’t actually be getting any mail but then again it’s better to give than receive right?
The Magic Mail Run with Beachcomber Cruises is the only licensed New Zealand Post Rural delivery service by boat in the Queen Charlotte Sound. It operates ex Picton from Monday to Saturday, all year round delivering mail and groceries to the families that live in these beautiful remote places. Each day is different as the route changes daily and you never know who you are going to meet or what you are going to deliver. I have noticed however, that a fairly regular item is that of the region’s finest Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc! In some places the internet is either unreliable or non-existent so you will often have children running down to greet the Mail Boat, I’ve never seen kids get so excited about school work…
Your skipper gives you a commentary about your surrounds and the history of the area and a real highlight is the 15-minute stop at Ship’s Cove. Ship Cove was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 when his ship The Endeavour anchored here and is also the starting point of the Queen Charlotte Track. I love that there is complimentary coffee and tea, I love even more that you are also able to bring any food or drink on-board because there is nothing quite like fresh sea air to make you hungry! I hope you will give the Magic Mail Run a try, not only because I work there but because it truly is a great way to explore the Marlborough Sounds.
Beachcomber Cruises are the Marlborough Sounds cruise, transport and Queen Charlotte Track transfer specialists. Proudly family owned and operated since 2006 we are open for business 364 days of the year.
