From Queenstown take State Highway 6 towards Te Anau. The unsealed Remarkables road is located on the left hand side and has a plenty of spots on the way up to take photos of the stunning views. Once you reach the skifield the start of the walking track passes the Sugarbowl chairlift. You then start a steady climb through alpine herb fields to the top of the Alta chairlift. From there you leave the ski field area and a series of flagstones mark the way up to an altitude of 1801m where your reward is stunning views of glacial Lake Alta.
Allow half a day, pack a picnic, take plenty of water and, most importantly, your camera. The views back over the valley on the way up are spectacular and the lake itself is the most stunning turquoise blue.
In winter there’s also the option to strap on some snow shoes and take to the hills with a guided company to experience the lake when it’s totally frozen over.
