Top 5 adrenaline activities in Queenstown

Did you know that Queenstown is the adrenaline capital of the world? Find out the top 5 adventure activities you need to try on your visit to Queenstown.

Queenstown is known as the adrenaline capital of the world; and a stay here is not complete without taking in at least one of the extreme activities it has to offer.

At Haka Tours we have tried our hand at pretty much all of them (call it business research). Here are our personal top 5 adrenaline activities we recommend on your next visit to Queenstown. All of these activities are available as add-ons to our adventure tours.

1. Bungy Jumping - i.e. Throwing Yourself Off a Bridge

What is more iconic than the humble bungy? Bungy jumping began in Queenstown. It transformed Queenstown from a sleepy town into its current-day buzzing self. Queenstown has plenty of options for bungy jumping, including the Nevis Bungy, featuring the highest jump in the southern hemisphere! This is one activity that is not to be missed.

2. Skydiving - i.e. Throwing Yourself Off a Plane!

It is no secret that New Zealand has gorgeous scenery. Queenstown is no exception to this; featuring snowy peaks, rolling hills and deep blue lakes and rivers. Now imagine getting to see this as you plummet down to earth from 12,000-15,000 feet in the sky?! Skydiving is often on the "must-do" lists for adventure seekers, and for good reason. Skydiving is one of the most popular add-ons for our tours, and when we ask people to describe what it was like, the most common description is "life-changing". We recommend that you pay a bit extra and take the higher skydive; believe it or not, it gives you more time to get "used" to it and is a bit less scary!

3. Heliskiing - Go Off the Beaten Track

Queenstown is known for a lot of things, not just adrenaline activities. Queenstown is the home to multiple ski fields, all world-renown for their quality and for their fantastic snow, accomodation and weather. While these ski fields are fantastic, skiing off the beaten-track is an experience that every serious skiier or snowboarder must try once. A great way to try this out is through heliskiing. Hop on a helicopter and let it take you to the top of your own private track! Ski/snowboard down at your own pace, and soak up the breath-taking views that are just for you.

4. Canyon Swinging - Have it Vanilla, or with Hot Sauce

Canyon swinging is a great alternative to bungy jumping. Your whole body is strapped into a harness, and you are swung down from a 109 metre platform! One of the things that makes canyon swinging so popular is that it has tonnes of flexibility. If you are looking for a vanilla rush but nothing too extreme, you can be swung normally. If you want a blood-pumping, extreme experience, then you can choose to be swung upside down! There are 10 different ways to choose from, so you can go with whatever looks the most fun for you.

5. Paragliding - A Relaxing Adventure

Paragliding is a strange but wonderful mix of adrenaline and serenity. When you get ready to take off, your nerves will be on edge; after all, you (and an registered glider) are about to set sail into the sky! But once you take off, your nerves are sure to relax as you take in the sights. Paragliding, like bungy jumping, had its birthplace in New Zealand. Initially used as a fast way for climbers to get down from the mountains, now anyone can enjoy the ride!

This is by no means a comprehensive list!  Queenstown has tonnes of other great adventure activities to try, including jet boating and heli-biking. Be sure to try out as many as possible on your trip to New Zealand! For more information on our New Zealand tours, be sure to take a look at our website.
