The Waitaki Valley takes your breath away - maybe its because there is so little traffic and just miles of beauty - breathtaking scenery that runs from the Southern Alps all the way past lakes, mountains, a braided river, stunning farmland, limestone wonders and finally into Oamaru.
Its understated and one of New Zealand's secrets, away from other well worn routes, coming off the beaten track at Omarama you can follow State Highway 83 past three hydro dam lakes with very little housing or people to be seen.
Perfect place for a picnic or to relax by the shores. There are many camping facilities and options to launch boats or go fishing.
Kurow holds the Valley's first cellar door and has its own regional tasting room in the old post office. From Duntroon you can follow a fossil trail through the Valley and see the world famous Elephant Rocks and original Maori rock art.
To get off the beaten track and see some of New Zealand's finest scenery and some unique attractions then a trip down 83 is a must!
