Wairarapa Must Dos

Lucky us – we’re locals here in the Wairarapa, just an hour north from Wellington on State Highway 2, at the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail.

Here are some the things we love – our “must-dos” when you come to our neck of the woods, at the heart of the Classic NZ WineTrail:

  1.  Kumara and pistachio falafels at Bar Salute in Greytown

  2. Enjoy the biggest ice cream in the Wairarapa at Renall Street Dairy in Masterton (even our Prime Minister has had one)

  3. Visit the coolest Kiwi chick around - our Miss Manukura, the white kiwi at Pukaha Mount Bruce

  4. Enjoy always getting a park in the main street in Masterton

  5. Cheese scones from Pain & Kershaw in Martinborough are fantastic!

  6. Beautiful brioche at the French Baker in Greytown. (It’s important to maintain energy while shopping in this little gem of a retail town)

  7. Mince and Cheese Pies from Cahoots in Greytown (and in fact any pie)

  8. Love the fact there are NO traffic lights in Wairarapa

  9. A cold beer in the sun at Cafe Solway, Masterton looking out at the Tararua ranges. Then get stuck into a bucket of balls on their golf driving range

  10. A little snooze under a row of vines before cycling onto the next cellar door in Martinborough

  11. $1 rides on the miniature train around the lake in Queen Elizabeth Park, Masterton on weekends and in the school holidays.

  12. A terrific day walk in the Tararuas, starting from Mt Holdsworth.  Throwing stones in the river there is good for stress relief too

  13. If you’re a cloud geek the Wairarapa is a great place to catch nor-west cloud formations specially in spring/summer.

  14. A glass or Urlar Sauvignon Blanc on a hot sunny day (pretty marvellous also on cloudy, windy or grey days)

  15. Sunsets and fish and chips at the Lake Ferry pub

  16. Delicious pastries from Cafe Mirabelle in Carterton

  17. The famous and fabulous Lime Chilli chocolate at Schoc Chocolate, Greytown

  18. Just that tiny bit of adrenalin as you cross the swing bridge in the Waiohine Gorge

  19. Splashing in the lagoon at Castlepoint … and the Lighthouse. Dramatic and stunning scenery. There is really nothing else like it in NZ.
