Cyclist and mountain bikers visiting Southland will love Welcome Rock Trails, the Around the Mountains trail, and the dramatic wilderness of the Catlins.
At Welcome Rock Trails you can experience the highlands which enticed gold miners in the late 1800s; the track itelf is based on a water race built in that era. The Around the Mountains trail begins on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu, a quick boat ride from Queenstown, offers alpine vistas and quaint historic townships where you can stop for the night. The trail is still being completed, but sections from Walter Peak Station and Kingston are open for business.
On the eastern edge of Southland, the Catlins is a coastal area full of natural wonders, which is also great for a ride. There's no doubt that scenery is king in Southland, so hop on your bike and get amongst the landscapes.
