Go west to the Waitakere Ranges and wind through wild and stunning locations like Huia, Piha and Muriwai.

The Te Henga Walkway, between Bethells and Muriwai, is part of the Hillary Trail, which connects a number of existing tracks in the Waitakere Ranges.  It is a great option if you’re looking for some solitude and fresh ocean air.

Start your journey from the carpark opposite the Lake Wainamu carpark, just a short distance from Bethells Road. The track heads in the direction of the ocean, ascending cliff tops at times. Parts of the track are narrow and steep so it’s best to walk the track in dry weather. There are boardwalks and bridges in parts particularly over wet/muddy areas.

You may choose to follow the track to O’Neill’s Bay (2 km, approximately 45 minutes one way) or Constable Rd (8 km or 3-4 hours one way). At the Muriwai end there is a steep climb to Constable Rd up a flight of steps, the 'Devil's Staircase'.
