The Great Lake Taupo region is home to a range of internationally acclaimed cycling and mountain biking trails, all set amongst stunning scenery.
Whether you want to experience gentle cycle trails, adrenalin-pumping mountain bike tracks or a part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, there’s a place to cycle or mountain bike for everyone in Lake Taupo. The region is a cycle-friendly destination and exploring its many trails is a great way to take in the native forests, volcanic mountains, clear rivers and picturesque Lake Taupo itself, the largest lake in New Zealand.
The Lake Taupo region is home to an impressive range of mountain biking trails. Here, mountain biking is a great year-round activity – the trails are always ride able and stay relatively dry, even in mid-winter, due to the free-draining pumice soil found here. The region was accredited by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) as a silver level ride centre, which means that it is home to large-scale mountain biking facilities that offer something for all riders.
Craters Mountain Bike Park
Craters Mountain Bike Park in Wairakei Forest is home to a network of 55km of expertly built trails, mainly through pine forest, that cover a total of 55km. Trails range in grade from 2 (beginner/easy) through to 5 (expert/extreme) and include a kids’ loop. The quality of the flowing downhills, perfectly formed berms and jumps is top notch, and how much time you want to spend here is up to you - there are enough trails to entertain for a whole day!
Taupo Pump Track and Dirt Jump Park
Taupo hosted the first ever Pump Track Nationals on this track in 2010 and, since then, the track has seen a huge rise in popularity. It’s the perfect place for knobbly-tyred riders, both adults and children, to practice their skills in a safe environment. The park is located off County Ave, in Spa Park. Both the pump track and dirt jump park are available for use by anyone at any time, although there may occasionally be events held here.
Great Lake Trail
The 71km Great Lake Trail traverses the bush-clad shores of Lake Taupo. A series of six linked trails provide an awesome mountain biking experience, with spectacular views across the lake to the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. Known as the best Grade 3 single track of the New Zealand cycle trails, the Great Lake Trail has been expertly created by a team of local track builders.
Another of the NZ Cycle Trails, the Timber Trail is a multi-day adventure ride through the Pureora Forest Park. The trail showcases beautiful native forest and many rare native bird species as well as the fascinating logging history of the forest. You’ll ride across the longest suspension bridge (140 metres!) of any cycle trail in the country and enjoy a great adventure in the New Zealand wilderness.
