Stunningly beautiful, it's sapphire waters, world-class trout fishing and endless water sport opportunities make Lake Taupo a leading draw card for many visitors to the region.
Lake Taupo is the largest fresh water lake in the Southern Hemisphere, roughly the same size as Singapore. Formed as a result of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the last 5000 years, Lake Taupo is in fact a crater filled with clear, fresh water.
Evidence of the lake’s fiery creation can still be found at certain spots around the lake, with natural geothermal hot spots a popular place to bathe.
Enjoy a scenic cruise taking in the iconic Maori rock carvings, peaceful kayak trips, parasailing, swimming, water skiing, sailing or heading out in search of landing one the region’s infamous trout.
The lake is not the only reason visitors come to Lake Taupo; its tributary rivers also offer fun and excitement. Try fly-fishing, white water rafting or jet-boating below the mighty Huka Falls.
