Protected from mammalian predators, the magnificent ancient forest on the mountain is home to a myriad of wildlife, much of which was previously only sighted on pest-free islands, including hihi (stitchbirds), pitoitoi (robins), kiwi, kaka, takahe, tieke (saddleback), yellow-crowned Kakariki, tuatara and Kokopu (fish).

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari offers the visitor a variety of well-maintained walking tracks, a range of guided tours, self-guided bush walks and a Visitor Centre offering wildlife info.
