With the Whanganui National Park on one side and the Tongariro World Heritage area on the other, Taumarunui is a perfect base for adventure. Located at the junction of the Whanganui and Ongarue Rivers, Taumarunui is the launching point for canoe trips into the Whanganui National Park.
With waterways in every direction, it’s a popular trout fishing destination. Thanks to the newly constructed Timber Trail Cycle Trail, Taumarunui is also a great base for cyclists passing through who intend on tackling the 1 – 2 day trail ride. Traversing this deep wilderness in an 87-kilometre trail reveals not only the awe-inspiring local beauty but also stories on how the region has changed throughout the ages.
28 kilometres south of Taumarunui is the Raurimu Spiral - a most amazing feat of railway engineering. It’s best appreciated from the train. In the winter, Taumarunui is a cost-effective place to stay if you aim to ski Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu, with a comprehensive range of shops, accommodation and a tasty selection of eating places.
