26 Day New Zealand Journey

This comprehensive tour showcases a land of spectacular beauty, wonderful wildlife and diverse cultural experiences.

Day 1: Auckland - Waitomo - Rotorua
Travel south to Waitomo Caves for a boat ride under a galaxy of glowworms. Continue east to Rotorua. Enjoy an evening of powerful cultural performance, storytelling and hangi feasting at Tamaki Maori Village.

Stay 1 night in Rotorua.

Day 2: Rotorua - Gisborne
This morning see roaring geysers, boiling mud pools and Maori arts and crafts at Te Puia,  visit the Agrodome to enjoy a farm show including sheep shearing and see kiwi and other wildlife at Rainbow Springs. After lunch join an Intercity coach to the East Cape city of Gisborne one of the first places in the world to see in each new day.

Day 3: In Gisborne
You have a whole day to explore Gisborne, a unique part of our country with beautiful beaches and home to several world surf champions and the largest Maori population in the country.

Day 4: At Queenstown
This morning join the locals on a coach to Napier, heart of the Hawkes Bay. Your afternoon is free to get to know our Art Deco city.

Day 5: In Napier
Today you will experience the best of the region on a sightseeing tour including Iconic Mission Estate winery, locally produced honey, a winery lunch, Te Mata Peak, and many fabulous Art Deco buildings.

Day 6: Napier - Wellington
Leave the East Coast behind and head South West to Wellington our capital city. You arrive into Wellington early in the afternoon and have free time for the rest of the day.

Stay 1 night in Wellington.

Day 7: Wellington - Picton
This morning leave the city behind on a 4 wheel drive tour. Head off the beaten track and see amazing wildlife from the comfort of a sealmobile. Enjoy morning tea with the seals and travel through New Zealand’s largest wind farm before returning to the city to catch an afternoon ferry to the South Island.

Stay 1 night in Picton.

Day 8: Picton - Nelson
Spend the day in the stunning Marlborough wine region visiting vineyards and cruising the Pelorus and Kenapuru Sounds onboard a Mussel Cruise. Sample wines and mussels along with local olive oils and schnapps before being dropped off in Nelson. Stay 2 nights in Nelson.

Day 9: Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson
Explore the Abel Tasman National Park, cruise along through the many beautiful beaches or jump off and take a walk through the wonderful scenery. Kayaking and extended walking options are also available.

Day 10: Nelson - Franz Josef Glacier
Leave Nelson and travel inland through Murchison, on to Westport and coastal Punakaiki where you can stretch your legs on a walk to the famous blow holes and pancake rocks. Re-join the coach and continue through Greymouth and Hokitika, known for its precious greenstone Pounamu. End the day at Franz Josef Glacier village, perhaps go for a soak in the local hot pools.

Day 11: Franz Josef - Fox Glacier
The whole day is available for optional excursions on to the glaciers, by foot or by helicopter or for local sightseeing.

Stay 1 night in Fox Glacier township.

Day 12: Fox Glacier - Wanaka
Continue south into dense rainforest broken by rugged coastal vistas, reach Lake Wanaka in the early afternoon where the rest of your day is free to explore.

Stay 1 night in Wanaka.

Day 13: Wanaka - Dunedin
Today you travel through central Otago and some of our sunniest towns at the heart of our stone fruit growing regions also home to our own gold rush in the 1800’s. This afternoon you have free time in Dunedin a town known for its Scottish heritage.

Day 14: Dunedin - Te Anau
Your morning is free, we recommend a trip on the Taieri Gorge railway or perhaps a sightseeing tour to Larncach Castle. Travel on to Te Anau this afternoon arriving in time to go for a cruise across the lake and see some glow worms if you wish, or check out local movie ‘Ata Whenua’ at the Fiordland cinema.

Day 15: Doubtful Sound Day Tour
Today you take a full day excursion into the awe-inspiring wilderness of Doubtful Sound. Very few people ever reach this very special part of our country, you will cruise across Lake Manapouri, drive the Wilmot Pass and then cruise out onto Doubtful Sound itself for a 3 hour nature cruise in one of the most remote locations on Earth.

Day 16: Te Anau - Milford - Queenstown
Pass through pristine beech forests to view the majesty of Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls and enjoy lunch on board a cruise on Milford Sound. Return to Te Anau, then follow the dramatic shores of Lake Wakatipu to reach Queenstown.

Stay 3 nights in Queenstown.

Day 17 & Day 18: In Queenstown
These days are free to enjoy this fabulous alpine resort. The Skyline Gondola is included in your tour. There are dozens of optional activities from thrilling jet boat rides and leisurely lake cruises to 4WD safaris and bungy jumping.

Day 19: Queenstown - Mount Cook - Tekapo
Travel through the Kawerau Gorge with its historic gold mines, cross the spectacular Mackenzie Country bound by the Southern Alps to the glacial lakes and into the Mount Cook National Park. Spend time in Mount Cook Village before arrive in Lake Tekapo, the world’s largest International Dark Sky Reserve.

Stay 1 night at Lake Tekapo.

Day 20: Lake Tekapo - Christchurch
Most of today is yours to enjoy Tekapo, try a lake activity, nature walk or visit Tekapo Springs at the base of Mt John. The coach to Christchurch leaves at 3pm and you travel through the Canterbury Plains to our second largest city.

Stay 1 night in Christchurch.

Day 21: Christchurch - Kaikoura
Join the Coastal Pacific train* this morning and travel through rugged mountain and coastal terrain. You arrive in Kaikoura with time to join a whalewatching cruise.

Day 22: Kaikoura - Picton - Wellington
Re-join the train and continue on along the coastline to Picton and then join the ferry between the South and North Islands ending your day in Wellington.

Day 23: Wellington - New Plymouth
Join the Coastal Pacific train* this morning and travel through rugged mountain and coastal terrain. You arrive in Kaikoura with time to join a whalewatching cruise.

Day 24: In New Plymouth
New Plymouth is a great town to explore on foot. Spend a few hours amongst the plants at Pukekura Park, go for a leisurely stroll along the seafront stopping to look at the art on the way or visit the many galleries in town.

Day 25: New Plymouth - Hobbiton - Auckland
Leave the energy city for Auckland. Stop at Kiwiana themed town Otorohanga to visit the Kiwihouse then head to the Hobbition Movie set for the afternoon.

Stay 1 night in Auckland.

Day 26: Auckland
Your tour concludes this morning on check-out.
