There’s endless things to do in Oamaru, with many attractions, restaurants and outdoor activities.

  • Moeraki Boulders: Just a 30min drive from Oamaru are the famous Moeraki Boulders. Formed 60 million years ago, these fascinating spherical rock formations make for a great day trip. Drive 5 min further into Moeraki’s tiny seaside village and have lunch at the award winning Fleurs Place – specialising in freshly caught seafood and local produce.
     
  • Blue Penguin Colony: Oamaru is home to the world’s smallest penguins. You can watch the penguins waddle ashore at dusk or take a behind the scenes tour around their nests during the day. Along with a special conservation program, a visit to the Colony is a worthwhile activity and great for kids.
     
  • Victorian Precinct: Oamaru is lucky to be home to a wonderful area of historic buildings and lanes. There’s a wide selection of entertainment and attractions on offer, all with quirky, historic interest. If you’re a  Steampunk enthusiast or antique collector, you will find lots of treasures on offer. The precinct is also full of transport, maritime and industrial history, with displays of bicycles, trains and railways, boats, cars, machinery and much more. Along with unique selection of restaurants, cafés and bars, you can easily spend half a day here.
     
  • Explore the Outdoors: Oamaru is located in the scenic province of Otago, offering spectacular beaches, walks, mountains and stunning plateus. Spend a day driving inland up the Waitaki River, and check out the various hydro-dams that power thousands of homes. The lakes created from the dams are popular holiday spots, especially for water-sports fanatics.

Oamaru has many award winning restaurants, with a variety of eateries to suit everyone. Ranging from cheap and cheerful Asian takeaways and great fish & chips to fine dining, top quality restaurants.  Otago has a delicious range of local cheeses, wines and produce, topped off with a few cafes that make a great coffee, there’s surely something to satisfy your appetite.
