With approximately 250 goats producing between 200 – 600 litres of milk a day, Gruff Junction - part of the Selwyn wine and food trail - churns out a whopping 3-4 tonnes of goat's cheese annually.
The recipient of numerous awards, Gruff Junction took out the prestigious Champion Goat's Cheese, in the 2010 New Zealand Cuisine Champion of Cheese Awards.
A typical visit to Gruff Junction includes a tour of the property, taking in the feeding and milking sheds, the cheese factory, and a meet and greet with the goats before sampling the wide range of goats cheese on offer.
Head cheese maker Anna explains that, “basically anything you can make from cow’s milk you can make with goat’s milk.
"It’s a common misconception that the cheese is going to be strong and ‘goaty’, but we aim to have a range of flavours for all palates.”
Clean country air, patting a few goats, and having a cheese tasting is a great way to spend an afternoon in Selwyn, Canterbury.
