First stop on the South Island MTB tour is Hanmer Springs. A small idyllic town set at the foot of the Southern Alps, it's a great place to unwind with thermal hotpools to relax and de-stress in. Surrounded by an evergrowing labryth of mountin bike trails, Hanmer Springs is fast becoming a bit of a mecca.
Heading north, the tour visits the Old Ghost Road, quickly asserting itself as one of New Zealand's "must do" rides. Carrying food and a sleeping bag, you'll stay overnight in a purpose built mountain top hut, allowing you to wake up to the serenity of New Zealand's backcountry. Over 80km, the trail meanders through native forest, alpine rocky bluffs and powerful rivers before popping out on the West Coast.
The West Coast of New Zealand is a unique location for all visitors, ravaged by the best Mother Nature can come up with it's beauty is a well kept secret. Featuring one of Lonely Planet's top 10 coastal drives in the world, the winding roads pass long empty beaches, windswept tree vistas and flowing river mouths. But it's the Punakaiki Rocks that have us all gasping in awe - how, when, why?
From the rugged coast, the tour heads back in land and to the heart of the Alps, Arthurs Pass. Driving through the giant mountains is inspiring, and makes you realise how small a part of nature we really are. Craigieburn provides some of New Zealand's best mountain biking, riding up to the local club owned ski fields, traversing valley to valley before finishing on the basin floor. A stunning location for hiking, caving, bouldering and mountain biking, no one wants to leave!
Moving South, a stunning drive takes the tour past Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Lindis Pass. An everchanging landscape keeps eyes glued to the scenery as we connect up some scenic and flowing mountain bike trails set in the heart of South Island. Views over Mount Cook, and the opportunity to visit provides a great "rest day" before riding towards the tussock covered Lindis pass.
Wanaka & Queenstown - Adventure Land
The adventure capital itself provides an excellent base to complete the last few thrilling days of the tour. A mix of epic mountain biking trails over alpine passes, 4x4 shuttled enduro laps and a bikepark for those looking for a thrill are available. Theres time to while away long summer days with mountain walks, jet boating and bungy jumping to tick those "outdoor adventure boxes," or pamper in a number of local spas. Come evening time, the tour heads to town, relaxing in stylish restaurants eating sumptuous dishes with award winning local beer and wine. Four days in paradise just isn't enough to do it all!
