An easy helicopter transfer or scenic car ride from Queenstown, Blanket Bay has to be one of NZ's finest lodges. From the moment you step into the front hall and look out over the views of lake Wakatipu with the mountains (snow capped at certain times of the year) beyond, you realise why they call this beautiful part of New Zealand, 'Paradise'. It's No wonder so many films (including Lord of the Rings) have been made here.
Katie and I were lucky enough to be staying 4 nights on our honeymoon and naturally wished it had been longer!
The delicious 5 course evening meals and pre dinner cocktails by the roaring fire side were an absolute delight served by some of the most friendly and experienced staff you could hope for. We particularly enjoyed having our night cap and cheese board served downstairs in the large and comfortable 'games room' where you could play everything from snooker, darts, shuffleboard to cards, monopoly or scrabble.
The various activities one can take advantage of range from 'helli' trips to Dunedin, the top of the 'Remarkables' mountains surrounding Queenstown, fishing or skiing. We chose to join a small group on a 4 wheel drive trip up to the base of the all year round snow capped Mt Ernslaw, which included a rainforest nature walk followed by an exhilerating return trip back down to Blanket Bay (yes they have their own jetty) along the dart river on one of those amazingly fast jet boats. Afternoon tea and biscuits never tasted so good!
Other days were spent meandering the footpaths close to the lodge, driving to Glenorchy enjoying a massage and spa and watching an afternoon matinee in Arrowtown - a delightful old goldmining village close to Queenstown, now that was a luxury for us as it's something rarely done!
But don't just take my word for it, - go there yourselves, enjoy and savour every moment, it'll definitely be one of your NZ highlights...
