Mount Alfred is located at the Northern end of Lake Wakatipu and is an easy 1 hour drive from Queenstown, through Glenorchy, to the start of the track. Mount Alfred is 1375m high and can be climbed on its Western side where the Dart River flows. A carpark on the right hand side of the road is the starting point.
It is a 4 – 5 hour return trip of uphill hiking. From the carpark there is a zigzag track that leads up the mountain all the way to the marked route which can be followed further up to the bushline. If you are interested in climbing on the exposed and steep upper track of Mount Alfred above the bushline, (which is highly recommended for the best views) then permission is needed from Earnslaw Station.
The view of Dart River, Lake Wakatipu and the Southern Alps, Glenorchy and Queenstown are magnificent and well worth the effort.
This track is not recommended for young children and you should have a good level of fitness.Remember to pack up a lunch, lots of water and most importantly your camera.
