Tawhitokino is a lovely secluded regional park tucked away at the eastern end of Kawakawa Bay Coast Road, about 50 minutes from Auckland city.
Part of the adventure is getting there as the park is only accessible by boat or by walking around the rocks at low tide (you can check the tides here). You’ll need good sturdy shoes to walk over the rocks (with stops to explore the rock pools!) and then it’s a bit of a climb (with steps) over the headland to the beautiful beach – it’ll take you about 20-30 minutes to get there and well it’s worth the walk. The track is not suitable for buggies so bring along a backpack for little kids. Bigger kids will enjoy the anticipation and adventure of discovering a “secret beach” and will race you over the hill!
The beach is long with golden sand and fringed with shady pohutukawas and offers safe shallow swimming. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic!
If you are heading to Tawhitokino Regional Park on a Sunday morning, the Clevedon Farmers Market is a fun and tasty stop on the way. The market runs from 8:30am – 12noon every Sunday and if you are planning a picnic, you’ll find lots of delicious treats for the basket.
Tawhitokino is one of our favorite Auckland spots – we are sure you’ll love it too! For more family friendly adventures, check us out at everywhereyougo.co.nz
