Not for the fainthearted, this track winds through a rocky riverbed. You'll be rewarded with stunning glacier views.
Some preparation is required for this walk (find preparation tips on the Department of Conservation website). The first 15 minutes of the Franz Josef walk are a breeze as the track winds through forest. The track becomes more challenging when it reaches the rocky riverbed.
If you’re looking to get some exercise and experience the icey wonderland up close, try this walk.
Starting from Franz Josef Waiau township, travel south across the Waiho River Bridge then turn left onto the Glacier Access Road. Continue on for roughly 4km to the car park at the end of the road.
