Waikato locals are proud of their rugby history and make a lot of noise about it – especially when people like the British and Irish Lions are in town.
The crowds will be in full chorus when Super Rugby team the Chiefs play the British and Irish Lions at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on 20 June, 2017.
Since 1951 when Waikato chose ‘Mooloo’ the Jersey cow as their mascot, supporters have rung their distinctive cowbells creating a fan-base as unique to New Zealand as the Red Army is to Great Britain. The lush farming region boasts a number of popular All Blacks including Sam Cane and Sonny Bill Williams.
Hamilton is an hour and a half south of Auckland, and is one of the New Zealand’s fastest growing cities. It is situated on the banks of New Zealand’s longest river, the mighty Waikato, which has deep significance for Māori. Waikato is also home to New Zealand’s fastest growing tourist attraction – Hobbiton Movie set – the famous shire which featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies.
