Taupo's volcanic lake and forested surrounds are a stunning setting for some of New Zealand's best and fabulously free-draining trails.
The Lake Taupo region, an IMBA Silver Ride Centre, is home to an impressive range of mountain biking trails. Here, mountain biking is a great year-round activity – the trails are always rideable and stay relatively dry, even in mid-winter due to the free-draining pumice soil found here. The region was accredited by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) as a silver level ride centre, which means that it is home to large-scale mountain biking facilities that offer something for all riders.
The region is a cycle-friendly destination featuring a part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. Exploring its many trails is a great way to take in the native forests, volcanic mountains, clear rivers and picturesque Lake Taupo itself - the largest lake in New Zealand.
