It may be small in size, but Oturehua is big on treasures from the past and golden views of Mt Ida.

Located 40km from Alexandra, Oturehua is located in the Ida Valley of Maniototo. Originally called Rough Ridge it was changed back to its Maori name with the introduction of the railway in 1907.

Oturehua is home to the famous Hayes Engineering Works, established in 1895 by millwright turned engineer, Ernest Hayes. This historic site is still in original condition and definitely worth exploring. It is open to the public during the summer and can be viewed by arrangement at other times.

Other Oturehua landmarks are the Gilchrist's Store (which has been in operation since 1902) and the Golden Progress Quartz Mine. It also hosts the famous annual Brass Monkey Motorcycle.
