6 Canterbury Ski Fields - a Skiers Haven!

6 Canterbury Ski fields along State Highway 73 - one of New Zealands most scenic drives offering tranquil camping spots and plentiful adventure.

Just one hours drive from Christchurch International Airport, populated by so few people, providing ski fields with varied terrain for all abilities - mum, dad and the kids.

Driving through this area, the scenery is spectacular in the high alpine mountains.  With hundreds of waterfalls cascading down the bush clad hillsides, mirror lakes offering convenient freedom camping or picnic spots ensure you capture all there is to see and do on this highway.

Lake Brunner boasts the West Coasts largest lake and it is a very popular holiday destination with an abundance of birdlife in the large wetland and rainforest ecosystem.  A perfect place to stay after a full days skiing.

The Otira Gorge on the Western side of Arthur's Pass features a remarkable piece of engineering with the road passing high on a viaduct through the large valley.  There are numerous lookout points giving great views of the valleys.  Watch out for the local residents - the kea is the world's only alpine parrot and can be extremely cheeky.

The New Zealand ski season usually operates from late June to early October depending on the snow conditions.  You can spend at least a week experiencing a new skifield each day!

Skifields to explore are:  Mt Hutt, Porters, Cheeseman, Broken River, Craigieburn, Mt Olympus and Temple Basin.
