The turn-off is about a 20 minute drive from Queenstown on State Highway 6 heading towards Cromwell. From there, a series of zig zags will take you up to the Crown Terrace where there’s a great spot to stop, take in the views and grab some shots of the valley below.
From there the road climbs to the summit (1119.7 metres above sea level) where the air is crisp and the outlook nothing short of spectacular. Park the car, soak up the landscape and if you’re keen to explore then take the short track to a viewing point which opens up an even more impressive view of the Carrick Range sloping steeply down to the Kawarau Gorge.
From there it’s all downhill through the beautiful rolling hills of the Cardrona Valley until you reach the Cardrona Hotel. Established in 1863 during the gold rush, this is one of New Zealand’s oldest hotels and is a great place to stop for a break. You can get a real sense of the past while soaking up the sun in the beer garden or kicking back by the fire. From the Cardrona Hotel it's a short 20 minute drive to Wanaka.
