Classic New Zealand Wine Trail – Don't miss Wellington!

It's a tough job being tucked between New Zealand's finest wine regions, but some city's gotta do it. That city is Wellington.

Wellington is a not-to-be-rushed spot along the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. Make sure you allow enough time to take in the lively and cultural capital.

Wellington is just one hour south of the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. It is famed for its coffee, café scene, shopping, nightlife and entertainment venues, so make sure you allow a few days to enjoy this cosmopolitan city. It shouldn’t be rushed!

Spend time discovering Wellington’s culture and enjoying the stunning harbour. Check into a live theatre show and dine in at an award-winning restaurants.

Wellington will be a lively break from the rural towns and picturesque vineyards of other Classic New Zealand Wine Trail spots. You can take a leisurely walk along the Wellington Waterfront, perhaps following the Writer’s Walk or spotting some of the 15 sculptures placed around the city.  Spend hours exploring the Museum of New Zealand – Te Papa, learning about New Zealand’s history and engaging in the interactive displays.  Just 10 minutes from the CBD you can spot the Kiwi bird, Tuatara’s, and various flora and fauna in the nature paradise, Zealandia: The Karori Sanctuary Experience.

As well as being known as a ‘foodie heaven’, Wellington is known as New Zealand’s coffee capital. So, before catching the ferry over the Cook Strait to Marlborough wine country, take in the smell of the seriously wicked café scene and great tasting coffee.

The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail is a sign-posted 380km (240 mile) self-drive touring route that leads you off the beaten track. Travel through five of New Zealand’s most interesting and scenic regions, including three major wine growing areas that account for more than 70% of the New Zealand’s total annual wine production.
