Doubtful Sound -The sound of silence
Take a day or overnight trip to Doubtful or Milford Sound from Queenstown.
In denTrip Planer
Located only a handful of hours from Queenstown, in the same region as Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound is three times longer and a staggering ten times larger than Milford with equally spectacular scenery and an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna.
Unlike Milford, Doubtful Sound is not directly accessible by road. Access is either by sea or via the Queenstown-Te Anau-Manapouri road.
From Manapouri take a short boat trip across the lake to the fascinating underground Manapouri Power Station and then go by coach over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove to board your cruise.

Doubtful Sound is dramatic and unspoilt and one thing that will strike you when you visit is its silence, broken only by birdsong or the sound of rushing waterfalls.
The steep hills are home to hundreds of waterfalls during the rainy season and some of the larger ones, notably Helena Falls at Deep Cove and the Browne Falls, fall over 600 metres. It’s a truly awesome sight.
