The beautiful resort town of Queenstown is perfect for a family holiday. With great weather, activities and green open spaces, you are very unlikely to hear the words “Mum I’m bored” at any point during your stay!

This is our guide to a fun filled family break that won’t cost the earth:

Gondola & Luge

The first thing many people notice when they arrive in Queenstown is the Skyline Gondola which takes you to the top of Bob’s Peak.  Open from 9am - late every day, it is also the start point of the Skyline Luge Tracks which are a must do activity for children and adults alike.  Choose from the scenic or advanced tracks and ride on sturdy 3-wheeled Luge carts down the twists and bends of the 800 metre long Luge tracks. Younger children can ride tandem with their parents and screaming is optional but definitely encouraged.

There is also a café, buffet restaurant, scenic viewpoints, downhill mountain bike tracks and short walks to do while you are there. A day will fly by!

Kiwi Birdlife Park

Next to the Gondola is the wonderful Kiwi Birdlife Park which is spread across 5 acres of parkland yet still just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Queenstown. The Park cares for many rare New Zealand species such as the Tuatara, Morepork, Kea and of course the iconic Kiwi.  The Kiwi are housed in special nocturnal houses and there are 4 feeding times a day, guaranteeing you a peek at this rare bird. In addition there is an entertaining and informative conservation show twice a day which the children will love. Save money and combine the birdlife park & the Gondola with the Kiwi Kombo family pass!

Family Activity Combos

Of course you can’t leave Queenstown without taking part in some of the adrenaline filled activities which the town is famous for.  But if your family is not quite ready for skydiving or bungy jumping there are still some thrilling options available.  We recommend the “Shotover High Five” operated by Queenstown Combos.  This includes the world famous Shotover Jet, a helicopter ride and the Skyline Gondola and Luge all in one package. Allow half a day for this amazing combo. The kids will love you for it!

Queenstown Lakefront & Gardens

It can be hard when travelling as a family to keep costs down.  But Queenstown has the stunning Lake Wakatipu, the Queenstown Gardens plus a number of playgrounds and bike tracks throughout the area to keep the kids amused, all without spending a penny!  Take bread for the ducks and head for the lakefront in town.  Then spend some time at the lakefront playground and take a stroll over to the Queenstown Gardens which has enough space to burn off some serious energy.

The Queenstown Gardens has a frisbee golf course which is FREE to play, all you need is a frisbee! It's great fun for all ages and it's easy to find your way around the 18 hole course as you walk around the gardens. Follow the map and signs from hole to hole, you can even keep score if you are feeling the competitive urge. Each whole is marked as par (just like in golf), you tee off and shoot for a basket at the end of the hole. It's lots of fun!

The gardens is also home to an indoor ice-rink in the winter months, but the warmer months of summer are perfect for  the outdoor skate park, as well as the tennis courts & lawn bowls.

Earnslaw Steamship

Another firm favourite is Queenstown’s steamship the TSS Earnslaw which sails across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak High Country Farm.  Here you can join a farm tour, watch sheep shearing and enjoy a morning or afternoon high country tea. Get a taste for the New Zealand country life.

Cycling Tracks

Grab your bikes and head for the cycling tracks of the Queenstown Trail. With over 100 km of wide smooth bike tracks around the the Wakatipu, you can ride some of the most safe and scenic cycling trails for miles without seeing a car!

Rental bikes are available in Queenstown and Arrowtown.

Wet weather activities

Never fear, when the weather is wet there is still plenty on offer to keep the kids entertained. Try the Caddyshack City indoor mini golf, cinema or ten pin bowls. The underwater observatory at the main town pier is a cheap way to feed the fish of Lake Wakatipu and Alpine Aqualand complete with hydroslide provides endless water fun for the kids.

Whatever the weather your family will have plenty to do in Queenstown.

Family Accommodation

As the sun finally sets on a perfect day you will need somewhere close by and comfortable to rest.  Blue Peaks Lodge & Apartments has modern lodge rooms and spacious, self-contained apartments to suit every family.  Situated in the heart of Queenstown, it offers FREE cots, highchairs, luggage & bike storage and offstreet parking.
