How to become a swinger in Queenstown – Visit the ledge

Sarah Bond, a Freelance Travel Writer from Dunedin, New Zealand, gives an account of her experience on The Ledge Swing.

I had no idea that The Ledge Swing, Queenstown could give me an adrenalin pump on a molecular level.

At the top of the Skyline Gondola, on Bob’s Peak, a boardwalk leads to The Ledge Bungy station. I’m standing in my ever so chic black and yellow riggers harness, still babbling about my bungy jump, saying “Nothing could be scarier...”

The professional site photographer looks sideways at me and smiles knowingly.

Phil, the Jump Controller, attaches me to two ropes and guides me to the Swing ledge.

“Come over here and step of the ledge, you’ll hang on that wire till we get you into position. Then you can pull that red tab to release,” Phil says, in a matter of fact voice. “Pull the red tab?!?!” I thought, “You’ve got to be joking!”

My feet are swinging in mid-air with a rock face beneath me. With the mind control of a Jedi knight, somehow I will my hand to ‘pull the pin’... on myself! The world falls away. The photograph taken at that moment could be titled “Primal Scream - New Millennium edition”.

Every atom in my body really is screaming!

I hang like a tea bag on the end of a line and wait to be winched back up. I look out over Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world.

Based on my experience its simple, if you want the biggest adrenalin rush on offer, The Ledge Swing needs to be top of your ‘To Do’ list.
