One Week Road Trip on the North Island

Planning a week-long adventure on the North Island? Make the most of your time, save money and have plenty of fun by hiring a campervan or motorhome!

Fill a week on the North Island with plenty of adventure, memories and fun. Consider hiring a campervan or motorhome from Cheapa Campa – their 2-, 4- and 6-berth vehicles offer an easy way to travel, and you don’t have to worry about packing and unpacking at each location. You can even freedom camp, which saves money and offers great flexibility.

Day 1: Auckland – park your motorhome close to the CBD – try Auckland North Shore Family Park or Auckland Airport Campervan Park. Try out your stomach for heights at the famous SKYCITY where views, dining and controlled free-fall are all on offer.

Day 2: Drive from Auckland to Rotorua and check into the Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park.

Day 3: Enjoy the bubbling, geothermal mud pools of Rotorua, and a Maori cultural show.

Day 4: Drive from Rotorua to the lake region of Taupo and take your pick from adventure, shopping and nature activities in the region. Fishing is a favourite activity here – even the most novice angler can catch something worth cooking up in the motorhome kitchen!

Day 5: Enjoy Taupo’s friendly, relaxed activities, especially on and around the lake. Then in the afternoon drive to Waitomo Caves and park the motorhome overnight nearby – this is a good area to try freedom camping.

Day 6: Explore the glowworm caves of Waitomo. If you’re adventurous, this is the place to try blackwater rafting.

Day 7: Return your vehicle back to Auckland. Make sure you’ve disposed of any grey waste at an approved dump point, cleaned the vehicle and filled up the petrol tank before you return.
