Here are some of the natural elements the team at Green Jersey Cycle Tours love about riding the Rimutaka Cycle Trail. After checking out Wellington for a day or two, get on your bike and ride!
Wellington Harbour - The East by West Ferry Provides the best start to your ride, we reckon people live in Eastbourne just so they can ride the ferry across the harbour to Wellington and back each day! Jump off the wharf to freshen up in the sea before setting off along the beautiful eastern bays. Magic.
Hutt River – Running water is relaxing. Ask the guys who you see fishing in the Hutt River a mere stone's throw from Wellington. Commuters, families, fitness fanatics, they all use the Hutt River trail frequently. It isn’t unusual to watch an angler catching a trout within metres of downtown. This 25 km section of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail that hugs the Hutt River really shows the valley at its best. Keep your eye out for LOTR filming sites. Stunning!
Rimutaka Incline – What we love about the Rimutaka rail trail is the ease of access and the diversity of scenery. The history associated with the Fell engine deserves its own little story. The lives of the hardy railway folk are chiseled into the landscape. On your way up the incline you follow the Pakuratahi River ascending at a rate of one metre for every 30 metres travelled. It is so gentle you will find it hard to believe when you reach the summit. Through a 580m long tunnel and onto an exciting 7 km downhill ride through native bush arriving at cross creek. Thrilling!
The Wild Coast – A challenging final stretch to the Rimutaka Cycle Trail. Follow the aptly named Wild Coast from Ocean Beach in the Wairarapa around to Orongorongo Station on the Wainuiomata Coast. This place is beautiful, scary, awesome, extraordinary, magnificent! Huge gravel “fans” where mountainsides have been washed by the rain to the coast. Windswept trees one moment, seal colony the next then “pow!” you are back in the city. Breathtaking!
