Sauvignon Blanc & Sunshine: Marlborough’s Perfect Combination

Love Sauvignon Blanc, sunshine and gourmet picnics on the beach? Then don’t miss incorporating Marlborough into your New Zealand holiday.

Marlborough is New Zealand’s largest wine-growing region; blessed with high sunshine hours and a moderate climate, it’s famous for delicious wines, seafood and produce. Here, there’s a beautiful freshness to the ocean and the land; food is simple, flavoursome and put together with skill and love.  Friendly residents are passionate about the cuisine they produce - living amongst picturesque river valleys and the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, locals are down-to-earth, easy to chat to and love living in this part of the world.

World famous New Zealand

Putting New Zealand on the map as a top Sauvignon Blanc wine producer, Marlborough’s version of this varietal is distinct in its gooseberry & capsicum flavours and robust aroma. Some call Marlborough the Sauvignon Blanc capital of the world – a hard invitation to resist if this is your drink of choice! For fans of fragrant, full-bodied Pinot Noir and other red varietals, this region also won’t disappoint. Marlborough’s wineries are set in picturesque river valleys, next door to native forests and rushing waterways. More than 30 quality wineries surround the tiny town of Renwick, all within a 30-kilometre radius – perfect to explore by pedal power! Quality wine tasting tours, whether by bike or by car, are plentiful in this region.

Local delicacies

Sitting at the meeting point of the Pelorus and Kaiuma rivers in Marlborough is the town of Havelock, one of the world’s top producers of green-lipped mussels. A New Zealand seafood delicacy, iridescent-green shells house the large cream or coral coloured meat which can be eaten hot or cold. Havelock is an old gold-mining settlement, and is home to a number of boutique buildings that now house delicious eating establishments. Other local Marlborough seafood delicacies also include salmon and blue cod.

The Marlborough Sounds

The jewel in Marlborough’s crown has to be the long, sheltered inlets and white sandy bays of the Marlborough Sounds. Here, emerald hills rise steeply out of the Pacific Ocean, creating an intricate part of coastline that houses sheltered inlets and white-sand beaches. Work up an appetite and make the most of a sunny day by kayaking from bay-to-bay or hiking over the headlands before finding the perfect spot to stop for a picnic.
